The Rosenbach is made up of two 19th century townhouses in Philadelphia and was founded in 1954 by Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach and his brother Philip. Both were renowned dealers in books, manuscripts, and fine art, while Philip specialized in building a collection of rare books.
Some examples of treasures that are still on display today are such as the only surviving copy of Benjamin Franklin’s first Poor Richard Almanac and the manuscript of James Joyce’s Ulysses. In 2013, The Rosenbach merged with the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation to combined the work of both collections of rare books, manuscripts, Americana, and art.
