In 1983, Darwin Schauer pled guilty to sexually abusing a former student in Minnesota. Schauer had been the principal and a teacher at a small parochial school and had begun abusing a 10 year old student. His 43 month sentenced was stayed, pending completion of a sex offender’s treatment program. It’s unclear whether he completed the program.
Fast forward to 1989, when Schauer was ordained as a lay minister at a Lutheran church, and there are allegations that leaders of the church knew of his previous conviction for sexually abusing a child. Schauer was allowed to teach communion classes to teens.
Now fast forward to 2012. Last month, Schauer was found guilty of sexually abusing a young teenager. The abuse is alleged to have begun when the victim was 10 years old. He will be sentenced on 12/28/12.
