History

For two centuries, Walnut Street Theatre has provided audiences with many sources of entertainment like the circus, live theatre performances, operas, vaudevilles, lectures, dance, music, and motion pictures.

Some of the most prominent 19th century American actors have appeared on stage at the Walnut Theatre like The Marx Brothers, Henry Fonda, Helen Hayes, William Shatner, the Barrymores, Katherine Hepburn, and much more.

The theatre opened its doors in February of 1809 to a roaring crowd of thrilled residents circling the equipped playhouse with a dirt riding ring for horses.

In the audience of the first-ever theatrical performance held at Walnut Theatre, President Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de Lafayette occupied seats on opening night.

In 1863, a son of one of the most prominent theatrical families during that time, Edwin Booth, purchased the theatre. Soon after, brother of Edwin, John Wilkes Booth, assassinated the President at Ford’s Theatre located in Washington, D.C.

Since then, the Walnut Theatre has undergone several renovations done to the interior and the exterior of the building. It provides a significant role in theatrical performances from then on to the 20th century.

In 1964, it was designated a National Historic Landmark, making it one of the most famous theatres to catch a show in Philadelphia.
